Our take
The confirmation of the trailer's authenticity by Bloomberg on October 22, 2026, validates the existence of a completed or near-completed asset for a game that is now canceled. This highlights the finality of BioWare's closure, as the footage shows a new protagonist and Liara T'Soni in a setting that fans will never play.
Background
The Mass Effect franchise began in 2007 with the first three installments centering on Commander Shepard. The fourth game, Mass Effect: Andromeda, was released in 2017 and introduced new characters, including protagonist Scott or Sara Ryder. The fifth installment was announced in 2020, leading to a wait of nearly ten years for fans.
On October 21, 2026, EA announced it was shutting down Mass Effect developer BioWare. This news caused confusion among fans regarding the development status of Mass Effect 5, which had been described as being in 'early' development despite the 2020 announcement. Prior to the leak, claims on Reddit from someone purporting to be an EA employee stated that the team at BioWare had a trailer ready to go.

Bloomberg Confirms Trailer Authenticity
Bloomberg's Jason Schreier confirmed through his sources that the leaked trailer is reportedly real, apparently resolving the initial uncertainty about the footage's legitimacy.[1]
Our read of the evidence
Mostly unverified. Both the leak and its reported confirmation derive from a single outlet's coverage, with no primary source verification documented. The authenticity assessment rests on a secondhand account of a journalist's unnamed sources, and no on-record comment from involved parties appears in the record. Independent corroboration of the footage and its status remains outstanding.
Our rating counts evidence, not opinions about anyone: events confirmed by a primary source (the person's own post, their official site, a court or government record) weigh most, then how many independent outlets report the story.
