What it means
OSRS is the standard shorthand for Old School RuneScape, the MMORPG developed and published by Jagex. It launched on 22 February 2013 as a version of RuneScape rebuilt from an August 2007 backup found in Jagex's archives, after the company's CEO polled subscribers on whether they'd want the older version run as a parallel game. The poll drew 449,351 votes, clearing the threshold Jagex had set, and the game has been running ever since.
Although it started as a straight restoration, OSRS has grown into its own separately maintained live game, with most new content and major changes decided through in-game player polls, updates only ship if they hit a player-approval threshold, which Jagex lowered from 75 to 70 percent in 2022.
Set in the fantasy world of Gielinor, it uses point-and-click controls, has no fixed character classes, and lets players set their own goals across skills, quests, combat, trading, and PvP.
In everyday usage, OSRS functions as both the name of the game and a marker of identity. Saying 'I play OSRS' signals a specific kind of gamer: someone comfortable with long grinds, sandbox progression, and a deliberately retro look.
The community has its own vocabulary built around the acronym, Ironman, Ultimate Ironman, and Hardcore Ironman accounts that restrict trading, banking, or death; Deadman Mode servers with open-world PvP; and temporary Leagues modes.
The term also carries a quiet rivalry with RuneScape 3, the modern version of the game, and players regularly debate which is better, as seen in Reddit threads where RS3 fans question why the 'old school' version is so much more popular.
There's also a much older, secondary texting sense of OSRS meaning 'on some real shit', slang for being completely serious, as in 'man I'm sick of my job, OSRS.' That usage shows up in Urban Dictionary entries about updating your status on social networks, but it's the minority sense today.
Among Gen Z online, OSRS overwhelmingly means the game: it trends around RuneFest announcements, new quests, and updates like the Sailing skill, and the r/2007scape subreddit, named after the 2007 backup the game was built from, is where the acronym lives its fullest life. [1][2][3][4][5][6]

Documented, dated uses of “osrs”: each quote is verbatim from the linked source.
“RuneScape 3 opened the doors to Menaphos back in 2017, offering players a veritable skillers' paradise, leading to a certain envy from OSRS players.”
“There are several possibilities for PvP fighting in the OSRS world, including dedicated PvP worlds, organized player-killing (PK) events, and wilderness regions where players may attack each other at will.”

Why it's everywhere
OSRS stays everywhere because the game itself keeps growing. In August 2025 it hit a record of more than 240,000 concurrent players, and in November 2025 Jagex released Sailing, the first entirely new skill ever added to Old School RuneScape.
Major regions like Varlamore rolled out in three parts between March 2024 and July 2025, and RuneFest keynotes keep generating news cycles, recent announcements included the long-awaited opening of Menaphos, Raids IV (The Fractured Archive), a Fairy Tale III quest, a Mining and Smithing rework, and Hardcore Worlds with a separate one-life economy. Each of these drops sends 'OSRS' trending across Reddit, X, and gaming press.
The acronym also thrives because the game fits modern second-monitor culture, it's the thing you grind while watching TV, as even mainstream coverage jokes about.
Mobile cross-play (launched October 2018, over a million installs in under two weeks) and a Steam release in 2021 made it easy to play anywhere, and the player-poll system gives the community a sense of ownership that keeps people posting, arguing, and memeing about OSRS years after most 2013 games faded.

How it gets used
Totally standard in gaming contexts, say OSRS, not 'Old School RuneScape,' once you're among players. The 'on some real shit' texting sense is dated and will confuse people now.
