Our take
The leak of 2 minutes of gameplay from a project cancelled in 2025 highlights the continued public interest in The Initiative's first title.
Background
Perfect Dark is a first-person shooter that was under development by The Initiative and Crystal Dynamics. The project was first announced in 2020. The Initiative, based in Santa Monica, California, was established in 2018 by former Crystal Dynamics boss Darrell Gallagher along with veteran developers. Perfect Dark was intended to be the studio's first title.
In 2024, Xbox showed gameplay for the reboot, four years after its announcement. Reports at the time indicated the game had been through a challenging development. In March 2022, VGC reported that the Xbox studio had seen a 'fast and furious' wave of senior departures over the previous year. The project was eventually cancelled in 2025 as part of widespread changes at Microsoft, alongside the cancellation of Rare's Everwild.

Our read of the evidence
Mostly unverified. Idle Sloth shared the leaked Perfect Dark gameplay footage, a claim reported by videogameschronicle.com. The same site later noted that VGC reported on the spread of the footage online. As of the dates given, no primary source has confirmed the authenticity of the clips, and the material remains based solely on those reports.
Our rating counts evidence, not opinions about anyone: events confirmed by a primary source (the person's own post, their official site, a court or government record) weigh most, then how many independent outlets report the story.
